What Causes Clogged Pores? The Hidden Culprits in Your Routine

Frustrated by constant blackheads and texture? Discover exactly what causes clogged pores, from internal hormonal spikes to the heavy silicones in your makeup.

What Causes Clogged Pores? The Hidden Culprits in Your Routine

You wash your face twice a day, you exfoliate, and you never sleep in your makeup, yet your nose is still covered in blackheads and your forehead is bumpy. If you are doing everything "right," what causes clogged pores in the first place? The answer lies in a microscopic traffic jam between your own biology and the products you apply.

The Biological Equation

A clogged pore (medically known as a comedo) is formed by exactly two things: Sebum + Dead Skin Cells.

Every pore on your face contains a sebaceous gland that produces oil (sebum) to keep your skin lubricated. Simultaneously, your skin is constantly shedding millions of dead skin cells. Normally, the oil flows freely out of the pore, carrying the dead cells away. But a clog happens when that process fails.

Internal Cause: Thick, Sticky Sebum

The biggest internal cause of clogged pores is your hormones—specifically androgens (like testosterone). When androgens spike (due to stress, puberty, or menstruation), they command your oil glands to produce far more oil than usual.

More importantly, these hormones change the consistency of the oil. Instead of being thin and fluid, the sebum becomes thick and sticky. This sticky glue grabs onto the dead skin cells inside the pore, creating a hard plug that cannot escape to the surface.

External Causes: The Skincare Trap

Even if your hormones are balanced, you can manually force a clog by applying the wrong substances to your face:

  • Heavy Occlusives: Ingredients like Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, and heavy waxes create an impermeable seal over the pore. The oil and dead skin cells cannot naturally shed, so they back up and harden inside the follicle.
  • Silicones (Dimethicone): Found in almost all makeup primers to give a "blurring" effect, silicones sit on top of the pore like plastic wrap. If you sweat under a silicone primer, that sweat and oil is instantly trapped.
  • Dehydration: If you don't moisturize, your skin becomes dry and flaky. These excessive dry flakes fall into your pores, overwhelming them and causing rapid blockages.

Summary

What causes clogged pores? It is the fatal combination of sticky sebum and dead skin cells. You can prevent this traffic jam from both sides: use Salicylic Acid (BHA) to dissolve the dead skin cells inside the pore, and eliminate heavy, occlusive ingredients from your makeup and skincare routines so the oil can flow freely.
